Privacy Policy
The short version: MegaPDF collects nothing. No accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers — and no network connection of its own. Your documents and your signatures never leave your device, because there is no server for them to go to.
This website is a separate thing from the app, and it counts page views. Section 3 says exactly what that counter records. The app is unaffected by it.
The support page collects nothing either: it has no form to submit, and it hands the message you write to your own email program rather than sending it. Section 4 says what happens to that email once you have sent it, and why we never publish what you wrote.
1. Who we are
Electric RV (Ontario, Canada) publishes MegaPDF and is the data controller for anything this policy covers. MegaPDF is free, open-source software; its complete source code is public at github.com/SlyWombat/MegaPDF, so every claim below can be independently verified.
2. What we collect
Nothing. Specifically, MegaPDF has:
- No accounts or sign-in — the app never asks who you are.
- No analytics or telemetry — no usage tracking of any kind, first- or third-party.
- No crash reporting — crashes are never transmitted anywhere.
- No network access — MegaPDF opens no network connection of its own, on any platform. On Android it asks you for no permissions; on iOS it requests no network entitlements; on macOS its App Sandbox grants it no network access; on Windows it asks for no network capability. On Linux, where the .deb, our APT repository and the tarball run like most Linux software, without a sandbox, the app simply contains no networking code: it talks only to your own desktop (over its local D-Bus session, for file dialogs) and to your printing system. The link in About MegaPDF opens our web page in your browser when you click it; that visit is your browser's, not the app's. The Snap, when it's available, is also built without network access.
The PDF documents you open, the edits you make, and the signature images you create are processed entirely on your device and stored only where you choose to save them. Redaction works the same way: the content you mark is removed from the file on your device, and nothing about it is sent anywhere.
Printing is the one place a network is involved at all, and it is
your computer's, not MegaPDF's. The system print dialog is what finds
your printers, including any on your local network. On a Mac, macOS asks your
permission before it looks, and MegaPDF supplies the reason macOS shows you. On
Linux, you choose a printer in MegaPDF's print window and MegaPDF hands the
document to CUPS, your system's own printing service (the lp
command); in the Snap, when it's available, the desktop's print portal does
that part instead. Either way the document goes to your printer and nowhere
else.
3. This website
Everything above is about the app. This site — the pages under electricrv.ca — keeps a cookie-free count of page views, so we can see how many people reach each part of it. It records the time, the page's address with any query string stripped, the domain that linked you here, your screen width, and a visitor hash that is rebuilt from a server-side secret every day and cannot be traced back across days. It keeps no IP addresses.
There are no cookies, nothing is stored in your browser, and no third party is involved: the counter is ours and runs on our own server. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, the request is never recorded at all.
None of this has anything to do with MegaPDF itself, which still opens no network connection of its own and reports nothing, anywhere. Downloading the app, fetching a screenshot, or updating from our APT repository is not a page view and is not counted; section 8 covers the server's ordinary access log.
4. Writing to us — the support page
Our support page (electricrv.ca/megapdf/support/) helps you find an answer and, if there isn't one, write to us about it.
The page itself collects nothing. It has no form to submit and no address to submit one to. The suggestions it offers are matched inside your own browser, against a list of answers that is part of the page you have already downloaded — so what you type there is never uploaded, never stored and never seen by us, not even if you close the page. It asks for no name and no email address. The visit to the page is counted like any other page view, exactly as section 3 describes, and nothing about what you typed is part of that.
When you press its button, the page opens your email program with the message you have just read in it, addressed to info@electricrv.ca. Nothing reaches us until you send it. Once you have:
- We use it to answer you and to fix the problem, and for nothing else. Never for marketing; never sold, rented or shared.
- We keep it as long as that takes — through answering you and fixing what you reported — and delete it when we no longer need it.
- Our email is hosted by Microsoft (Microsoft 365), which handles our mail on our behalf under its own terms. You can verify that from our domain's public MX record.
- If you send us a document, we keep it only for as long as we need it to reproduce the problem, and then delete it. The support page asks you not to send one unless we have asked — a PDF you are having trouble with is usually full of things we have no business reading.
We never publish what you write. MegaPDF is developed in public, on GitHub, but your message is not: it is an email to one person. If your report turns into a bug worth tracking, we write that public issue ourselves, in our own words, describing the problem — not by pasting yours, and with nothing in it that identifies you. If we ever wanted to quote you, we would ask you first.
The support page also offers the opposite choice, clearly labelled: filing a public issue on GitHub yourself. That is a page on github.com, permanently public, under your own GitHub account and covered by GitHub's privacy policy rather than this one. It is your decision, never ours.
To have a message you sent us deleted, write to privacy@electricrv.ca and quote the reference from it.
5. Your signature library
Signatures you draw or photograph are stored in the app's private storage on your device, and nowhere else. Deleting a signature in the app deletes its file; uninstalling the app removes the entire library. Linux is the exception: Linux package managers leave your own files alone, so the library stays in your home folder until you delete it.
6. Unlocking a protected document
MegaPDF can open a protected PDF once you unlock it, and can set, change or remove the protection on one. Nothing you type into those dialogs is kept: it goes straight to the PDF engine and is gone with the dialog. It is never written to disk, and the crash-recovery journal keeps nothing from a protected document in the clear.
7. Files and permissions
MegaPDF only ever reads or writes a document when you explicitly pick it through your device's own file picker (Windows file dialogs, macOS's open and save panels, the desktop's file-chooser portal on Linux, Android's Storage Access Framework, iOS's Files picker). The app holds access only to the files you chose, for as long as your device's rules allow, and requests no standing access to your storage, camera, contacts, location, or anything else.
8. Third parties
MegaPDF embeds no third-party services, SDKs, or advertising. The app stores you install it from (Microsoft Store, Google Play, Apple's App Store, and on Linux the Snap Store and GitHub) collect their own install statistics under their own privacy policies; that data is theirs, not ours, and none of it reaches Electric RV in a form that identifies you.
On Linux you can also install MegaPDF from our own APT repository at electricrv.ca. When your package manager checks it for updates, our web server answers like any other and keeps its ordinary access log of the request: the address that asked, the time, and the file. We use that log only to keep the server running, never to identify anyone. MegaPDF itself never contacts the repository; your package manager does, when your system checks for updates.
9. Children
MegaPDF is suitable for all ages and collects no data from anyone, children included.
10. Your rights
Under Canada's PIPEDA, Quebec's Law 25, the EU's GDPR, California's CCPA, and similar laws, you have rights to access, correct, and delete personal data an organization holds about you. Because MegaPDF collects nothing, Electric RV holds no personal data about you to access, correct, or delete — but you are always welcome to ask: privacy@electricrv.ca.
11. Changes to this policy
If a future version of MegaPDF ever introduces a feature that collects data (for example, opt-in crash reports), this policy will be updated before that version ships, the change will be noted in the app's release notes, and the app-store privacy declarations will be updated to match.
